Regarding skincare, The Ordinary is a brand many turn to for its affordable yet effective formulations. Known for its straightforward ingredients and transparency, the brand has earned a loyal following. However, not every experience with their products is a success story, as I recently discovered with their Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Serum.

First Impressions: Packaging, Smell, and Texture

The packaging of The Ordinary products is simple and minimalistic, and this serum is no exception. It comes in a small dropper bottle, is easy to use, and is aesthetically pleasing on any shelf.

The product’s smell was surprisingly pleasant. Unlike some serums that can smell overly clinical or artificial, this one had a neutral, fresh scent that I found pretty enjoyable.

The texture, however, took a bit of getting used to. While it’s designed to be lightweight, it felt slightly sticky upon application. It absorbed into the skin after a minute or so, but the initial tackiness was noticeable. Despite this, I remained hopeful about the potential benefits it could offer.

The Problem: Dryness and Redness

Unfortunately, this serum’s performance was far from what I expected. Hyaluronic acid is celebrated for its hydrating properties, and with the addition of vitamin B5, it should have left my skin plump, soft, and moisturized. Instead, it had the opposite effect.

Within just a few days of use, my skin started to feel uncomfortably dry and tight. Red patches began appearing on my cheeks and forehead, usually calm and problem-free areas. Alarmed but determined to give the product a fair shot, I adjusted my routine to see if anything else could be causing the issue. Sadly, the dryness and redness persisted, and they were directly linked to the serum.

Allergy Test Passed, but Still a No-Go

Before trying the product, I conducted an allergy patch test as recommended. The absence of any reaction gave me the confidence to proceed, so I knew it wasn’t an allergy-causing my skin’s adverse response. This made the experience even more disheartening because it’s not often that a product fails so completely despite being compatible with my skin type on paper.

A Disappointing First Encounter with The Ordinary

This was my first time trying a product from The Ordinary, and I had high hopes based on countless glowing reviews from friends and online. Unfortunately, my experience was far from positive. It’s disheartening because I genuinely wanted to like the brand and this particular serum.

Final Thoughts

While The Ordinary’s Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Serum didn’t work for me, I recognize that skincare is deeply personal. What’s a holy grail for one person might be a complete failure for another. This product might still work wonders for others, but it was a disappointing introduction to a brand I was eager to explore.

Have you tried this serum or other products from The Ordinary? I’d love to hear about your experiences—both the highs and the lows. After all, sharing our skincare journeys helps us find what works best for our unique needs.
